Furthermore, if the president says the same thing he has been saying for years, you criticize him, but if he changes his direction you call him a quitter.

I think he gave a detailed report card for the progress of the Iraqi security forces. I think he outlined specifically what the Iraqi forces need to be able to do for us to be able to leave. I got a better sense that things are heading in the right direction.

Yes, the President mentioned similar themes he has been saying for a while that this will be a long, tough battle, but he does not intend to back down. But I also heard ideas that are encouraging, about how troops have been shifted to different roles and will continue to be shifted as the commanders on the ground see fit.

Although it lists "challenges", there's nothing new! The "plan" reads like campaign talking points.

I have to agree with Erik: I didn't hear a plan for success; I heard much of the same rhetoric I've heard before. Perhaps we all prejudged the speech and simply left with what we brought.

Anyhow, I just read an article that described Bush as Platonic (http://www.slate.com/id/2095160/). I don’t think the author had his philosophy quite straight, but his version of Plato vs. Aristotle reminded of your conversations over the last few days. Keep up the debate!
