Cardinal Paul Poupard on a tear against Creationists

... Defending the Theory of Evolution,

Cardinal Paul Poupard, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said the Genesis description of how God created the universe and Darwin's theory of evolution were "perfectly compatible" if the Bible were read correctly.

His statement was a clear attack on creationist campaigners in the US, who see evolution and the Genesis account as mutually exclusive.

"The fundamentalists want to give a scientific meaning to words that had no scientific aim," he said at a Vatican press conference. He said the real message in Genesis was that "the universe didn't make itself and had a creator".

This idea was part of theology, Cardinal Poupard emphasised, while the precise details of how creation and the development of the species came about belonged to a different realm - science. Cardinal Poupard said that it was important for Catholic believers to know how science saw things so as to "understand things better".

So why can't scientists be equally more open minded to the ID theory?
It's not a matter of being open-minded as the idea of intelligent design is non-scientific.
Granted, but there is nothing wrong with acknowledging its validity.
But intelligent design is not scientific. Not just invalid science, but not science at all.
I never said it was science, but it could very well have some value. Would it kill a scientist to say so?
I mean, why are scientists afraid of people believing the creation story? Just because it cannot be proved, how does that hurt anyone that believes it?
It's more important that creation myths can't be falsified than they can't be "proven". This is one of the reasons intelligent design is not scientific: all scientific ideas must be falsifiable. That is, there must be a way to show the idea to be false.

There are no tests or observations that could possibly be made that would show the idea of intelligent design to be false.
So, why are you afraid of ID?
Evolution is the central idea of biology and innocent kids deserve not to be misled about it.
I never said to mislead kids about anything. I think to ignore a widely held theory, however, does a disservice to children and society.
Claiming the intelligent design is scientific is misleading kids. Er, lying to them.
Who says it is scientific?
People who want ID taught alongside The Theory of Evolution are claiming intelligent design has scientific merit.
Wasn't your original point that Cardinal Poupard was acknowledging that ID is not scientific?
Right. His statement was for the benefit of the fight with lunatic fundamentalists who are trying to push intelligent design into public school science curriculums.
