Fighting with one hand behind the back

"Although a democracy must often fight with one hand tied behind its back, it nonetheless has the upper hand. Preserving the Rule of Law and recognition of an individual's liberty constitutes an important component in its understanding of security. At the end of the day, they strengthen its spirit and its strength and allow it to overcome its difficulties."

That is exactly why, when this country went to war with England for our independence, our founding fathers wrote a Declaration of Independence demanding the rights of democracy and wrote a constitution giving us freedom. They took those freedoms, an act of treason, knowing we were going to end up at war - that the very act of taking them would bring us to war. And against odds, early Americans won that war so that we might be a free people, in control of our own destinies.

My thought? It is very sad that we have given up our rights, our very heritage, out of fear. It is very sad that we need be reminded of what we give up by a body in a nation with a much more direct threat ready and likely to hit them at any time.
